Kayu Arang is a tree of the secondary forests. It has a special trick whereby its bark will peel off in thin layers causing epiphytes to be thrown off before they gaina foothold on the tree. The weight of epiphytes can cause stress in a tree through their weight, ultimeatly causing loss of branches. The bark colour and texture is quite distinctive and the leaves are arranged as opposites.
